Hi mARToons fan!

Blizzards are raging across Canada these days.

What amazes me about them is folks’ behavior.

Vehicles still whiz by at insane speeds … everyone rushes to squeeze in that pit stop at the coffee drive through before racing to work.

It’s as if the blizzard didn’t exist.

I think it reveals a lot about our attitude to the environment: Conquer it at all costs.

Once when a major snow dump hit Prince George several years ago, pedestrians like me had to walk on the road in vehicle tire tracks.

Oncoming vehicles barely altered their behavior – as if the snow (and the pedestrian) wasn’t even there.

The industrial system in our society is a giant machine, and all those inputs out there – all those people in the speeding vehicles racing to work – take pride in dutifully beating nature back.

One thing I chuckled at when I first heard it, but now agree with it, is how on Vancouver Island when a big snow hits, they cancel school.

That’s the safe thing to do – keep all those school buses off the slippery roads.

Yet in most of the rest of the country, it’s the MACHINE THEORY at work.

Step aside nature!
