Hi martoons fan!

Social media has changed the concept of “context”. If you want to be a smooth social operator, gone are the days when you could simply see someone you recognized from somewhere and say “hi” in another place. Try that now and you’ll either be ignored or scoffed at as some kind of misfit.

“Context” has become incredibly tight. Only if you see the person in our example above in a context somewhat related to the original context (e.g. work) will you get a favourable response.

As time goes by, however, older citizens such as myself gain an understanding of this modern context game, and even find I even benefit from it. I no longer need to waste time on superficial greetings and “hey! there’s trouble” or “what’s up trouble?” Those kind of throw-away sentences, which used to lead to meaningful conversations in many cases, have been thrown away. So I lose that ice-breaker but I eliminate what could also be an annoying, time-wasting hassle.

Here’s to keeping things relevant – and in context!
